Property Owner's Association (POA) - About Us
The Mountain Lake Property Owners Association is located around a 70-acre lake at the end of Killingsworth Cove Road in Gurley, AL. This private lake was formerly known as R. L Smith Lake. It is recorded under the 1985 Articles of Incorporation as Mountain Lake Estates Property Owners Association. Use of the lake (fishing, boating, swimming) requires a permit. Only property owners within the Mountain Lake Estates may purchase an annual usage permit for $100. Owners in good standing are issued a guest permit for lake use by persons other than the owner.

Work in Progress to restore the integrity of the dam. What can I volunteer to do to help??!!
- Trees and vegetation are being removed on the lake side of the dam.
- Vegetation the opposite side of the dam still needs to be removed. Tree roots cause the dam to deteriorate even quicker because the roots loosen the soil.
- Concrete aggregate (first batch donated from MAPCO in Gurley) has been added to lake side of dam to widen and help stabilize erosion.
- Smaller pieces of aggregate and dirt are still needed to fill in around the concrete slabs.
- Renting a skid steer loader is costly (~$1200/40 hours) plus purchasing diesel fuel. To complete work on the dam, more funds are urgently needed. Volunteers with experience on running a skid steer loader are needed! If you cannot operate a skid steer loader, you can donate some time serving as a safety spotter to the equipment driver and/or do common area maintenance.
- Volunteer to bring food, snacks, water or beverages to the workers.
- Bring your weed trimmer, mower, loppers, chain saws and/or pole trimmer to work on removing the vegetation.
- Volunteer to spray 2,4-D Amine (not harmful to aquatic life) to undesirable vegetation on the dam.
- Haul downed trees on the dam to the boat launch area and cut them into manageable pieces.
Elimination of Milfoil
- An aquatic herbicide granular product is currently being used on a trial basis in a few test areas in an effort to eliminate the milfoil. Assessing the effectiveness of this product is needed prior to a large-scale application. This is also a costly endeavor and funds are needed.
- Once the milfoil has been eradicated, blue pond dye should be added to help prevent the milfoil from returning.
Lake Rules
1. No one permitted on the Lake or fishing from the shore, except members in good standing or guests with a guest permit from a member in good standing.
2. Members and guests must have valid permits in their possession while on the lake or fishing from the shore.
3. Guests must be accompanied by a member unless in possession of a guest
permit.
4. Lock combination to the boat launch gate shall not be shared with anyone.
5. No gas-powered engines in use allowed on the Lake, trolling motors only.
6. No live fish are to be removed from the lake.
7. Everyone must obey creel limit set by the Lake Association Board members.
8. No illegal drug use, loud music, littering, disrespectful or threatening behavior will be tolerated on or around the Lake.
9. Guests are not allowed to carry any firearm(s) at lake access points or onto a boat.
10. Boating and swimming in the Lake will be at your own risk!
11. No water shall be diverted from the Lake for irrigation or other purposes.
12. No trespassing on the dock platform.
Disobeying any of the above stated rules may result in suspending or revoking of Lake access and/or reasonable fines.
Hold Harmless
Mountain Lake Estates Property Owner(s) and authorized guest(s) hereby agree to hold Mountain Lake Estates POA harmless from any and all claims, charges, debts, demands and lawsuits, to include attorney fees related to the management of the herein described property, and from any liability for any injuries sustained by any property owner and/or guest(s) on or about the property.
Restoration of a healthy fish population
A lake survey was conducted by Aquatic Services. This revealed there was a small number of bass (over 16") in the lake. The amount of small, stunted bass was very high. The bluegill population was also severely low. In order to create the needed balance, a lot of the small bass need to be removed and bluegill will need to be purchased and added to the lake. This will be a project spanning over several years.

Killingsworth Cove Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) - Donnie Sharp donniejulia@gmail.com VOLUNTEERS DESPARATELY NEEDED!! In order to keep everyone's homeowners' premiums down and ensure a rapid response in the event of a fire, we need more firefighters. Training and materials are free. You can volunteer the days and/or nights you would be available. If volunteer personnel are not received, then the fire department will have to close. This will result in a significant increase in our homeowner's premiums!

Lake Work Morning on the Dam, April 26th 8:00am
There will be a work morning on the dam and other lake access sites of the Mountain Lake Property Owner's Association on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 8:00am. Lunch cookout to follow at 11:30am at the Killingsworth Cove VFD #1. Drop us an email to let us know you will be coming. Bring those weed wackers, chainsaws, gloves, etc.
